The 3rd Meeting of the Working Group on Energy Transitions (ETWG) under the Indian G20 Presidency begins in Mumbai from May 15-17, 2023. The meeting will bring together more than 100 delegates from G20 member countries, special invited countries and international organizations such as the International Energy Agency (IEA). and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
The 3rd meeting of the ETWG will be chaired by Shri Alok Kumar, Chairman of the ETWG and Secretary, Ministry of Energy, Government of India. Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Vivek Bharadwaj, Secretary, Ministry of Mines, and Amrit Lal Meena, Secretary, Ministry of Coal, will also take part in the meeting and participate in the deliberations.
The special address on the opening day of the meeting will be delivered by the Minister of State for Railways, Coal and Mines of the Government of India, Shri Raosaheb Danve.
priority areas
There are six priority areas outlined under the Indian G20 Presidency. These priority areas reflect India’s focus on various aspects of energy transition and building global cooperation towards sustainable and clean energy development.
The six priority areas are energy transition through the treatment of technological gaps; low-cost financing for the energy transition; energy security and diversified supply chains; energy efficiency, low carbon industrial transitions and responsible consumption; Fuels for the Future (3F); and universal access to clean energy and a fair, affordable and inclusive energy transition path.
Working Group on Energy Transitions
The first two meetings of the ETWG were held in Bengaluru and Gandhinagar, respectively. The Mumbai discussions and deliberations will continue to build on the first two ETWG meetings to identify and promote best practices, policies and innovative approaches that can support a just and inclusive energy transition. The aim is to develop a collective roadmap to achieve sustainable and equitable growth while effectively addressing the challenges associated with the energy transition.
The third meeting of the G20 Development Working Group begins
In parallel, the meeting will be complemented by eight side events that will further enrich the discussions and provide concrete ideas on various aspects of the energy transition.
These parallel events are: “Workshop with the MDBs with the objective of mobilizing low-cost international financing”, “Seminar on the Just Transition Roadmap”, “Seminar on Biofuels”, “Seminar on Offshore Wind Energy”, ” Sharing global policies and best practices to decarbonise sectors that have had to abort”, “Seminar on SMRs (Small Modular Reactors) for a clean energy transition”, “Synergizing the energy transition paths of the G20 ETWG and the Energy Perspective of the India of the B20”, and “Accelerating Energy Efficiency and promoting an energy efficient life”.

The Indian G20 Presidency has pledged to build on the efforts and results of previous Presidencies, underlining continuity and the collective pursuit of global cooperation in the clean energy transition. The Indian G20 Presidency intends to continue this trajectory and further strengthen global cooperation in the clean energy transition.
