( Spanish) – This June 7, the opening ceremony of the Summer Game Fest 2024 was held in Los Angeles, United States, the new reference video game event to replace the now defunct E3 fair in which video game developer and distributor companies gather to announce new works and updates to their existing titles. An event in which a multitude of games and companies seek to attract attention with their best presentations and trailers.
The conference lasted about two hours and featured announcements of several dozen new and existing games. At en Español we compile the best that the gala left, the ten advertisements that stood out for their novelty, their uniqueness or their surprising nature.
The first announcement of the event was through the front door. Sony’s popular and successful “Horizon” franchise mixed with the charm and humor of the Lego franchise. A new way of telling the story of the first two games in a new universe, with the possibility of playing cooperatively and with very polished visuals. It will even arrive at Christmas on PS5, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.
One of the proposals that captivates due to its precious artistic section is “Neva”, the new work of the Spanish studio located in Barcelona, Nómada Studio, creators of the successful and also artistic “Gris”. This Summer Game Fest revealed the first trailer with gameplay of the title and made it clear that in addition to being a title that relies on a beautiful graphic style in emotional and evocative natural settings, it will have a dynamic combat system with very fluid animations that were reminiscent of games like “Hollow Knight.”
Sid Meier’s legendary saga of strategy, diplomacy and management through the history of civilizations returns with a seventh installment eight years after the last. The title was announced with a cinematic trailer that explores all eras in human history and confirmed that it will arrive in 2025.
“Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, the new “Dragon Ball” game that promised to return to the gameplay style of the beloved titles in the “Budokai Tenkaichi” saga, had already been announced previously, but this Summer Game Fest was in charge of confirming that it will be released on the 11th. October 2024 and revealing new images of the game and confirming what was expected: graphically it will look top-notch and will have a cast of characters ranging from the original saga to “Super”.
The successful horror film distributor Blumhouse, responsible for franchises such as “Paranormal Activity” or “Insidious” will now finance and distribute horror video games, starting with six titles that it showed during the Summer Game Fest. The intention is to provide a space for developers to create new terrifying experiences, including a game created by Sam Barlow, creator of successful works such as “Immortality” (which was among E’s highlights in 2022) and Brandon Cronenberg, horror filmmaker and son of horror master David Cronenberg.
The legendary Power Rangers return to video games thanks to Digital Eclipse with an action title in the style of 90s arcades that will even mix different genres.
“Among Us” became one of the most celebrated and popular indie games of all time during the Covid-19 pandemic. Innersloth, its developer studio, announced during the Summer Game Fest that they want to take advantage of the profits to finance other small independent projects and contribute to a better industry. They announced six new titles, including the original “ONE BTN BOSSES”, a challenging boss fight game in which you only play with one button, or “Project Dosa”, a game in which you will have to cook for local communities while Players pilot a ‘mecha’ robot.
8. “Wanderstop”
Davey Wreden is the creator of “The Stanley Parable” and “The Beginner’s Guide,” two of the most important, acclaimed and surprising works in the medium. Now he returns nine years later with a new commercial title, “Wanderstop,” which promises to once again subvert expectations in what appears to be a story about running a tea shop in which there will be much more hidden.
“Alan Wake 2”, from Remedy Entertainment, was one of the most acclaimed titles of 2023 for its horror narrative bet and its graphic power. At the Summer Game Fest, its creator, Sam Lake, announced a new expansion, “Night Springs”, which will tell three stories within the game universe with already known characters from the saga, including one with the protagonist of “Control”. And the expansion will be available on June 8, less than 24 hours from its announcement.
The shadow of the games of the Japanese developer From Software is long and “Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice” marked a before and after in challenging action games that are set in that feudal Japan that abounds so much in video games. Following in that wake comes “Phantom Blade Zero”, a title developed by the Chinese studio S-Game that is clearly inspired by “Sekiro”. However, the new trailer they showed at the Summer Game Fest, with which they closed the event, made it clear that the title has its own weapons: top-notch graphics and intense, frenetic combat.
