Thailand’s Prime Minister controls the water situation in Ayutthaya

The increase in the flow of the Chao Phraya dam it has affected the provinces through which the Chao Phraya River passes. Thailand’s prime minister has visited Ayutthaya province in his capacity as defense minister to inspect flood-prone areas.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, in his capacity as defense minister, gave moral support to soldiers working on flood prevention in Ayutthaya.

For his first inspection of the day, General Prayut went to the Kasattrathirat temple in Ban Pom sub-district, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district. The temple is located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River. He was informed of the water situation at the site and of the preparations that are being carried out for the expected rise in the water level.

General Prayut interacted with the soldiers filling the sandbags that were used to erect temporary embankments. He also inspected the operation of water pumps and delivered relief items to people affected by the floods.

The water from the river had penetrated parts of the temple, situated on some of the lowest ground in Ayutthaya province. This place is usually the first to be affected when floods hit Ayutthaya.

ADB calls for more efforts for water security and resilience

Meanwhile, the governor of the province of Ayutthaya, Wirachai Nakkamat, reported the worrying situation of the waters due to the increase in the rate of discharge in the Chao Phraya dam.

General Prayut then went to the nearby Sri Suriyothai Pagoda, located on the other side of the Chao Phraya River. He lent moral support to municipal personnel working in the area and was greeted by several supporters. He observed the installation of a water barrier at this location.

The prime minister and defense minister then went to Siriyalai Palace, another flood-prone area in the Ayutthaya city area.

During the visit, General Prayut said that the government has made preparations for the imminent situation of the waters. Military units in the area have also prepared the relevant tools and equipment. General Prayut asked the inhabitants of the area to also prepare for the water situation.
