September 6 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Thailand’s new government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the youngest in history, was sworn in on Friday at a ceremony held at the Royal Palace in Bangkok before King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who offered his best wishes to the new cabinet.
The new 35-member government is due to meet for the first time on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. local time, marking the final return to power of Thailand’s influential Shinawatra family. The prime minister will then present her main lines of government to parliament.
The inauguration ceremony thus completes a two-week government formation process that began after the Constitutional Court dismissed Srettha Thavisin as prime minister on ethical grounds.
The King, for his part, has expressed his “good wishes” to all the ministers, asking them to show the “will necessary to carry out their duties in accordance with their oath for the good of the nation and the people.” “I know that you will do the right thing,” he added, according to statements reported by Thai public television.
The new prime minister was elected by parliament to succeed Srettha, but the new coalition government – led by the Pheu Thai party – has hardly changed from the previous one.
Shinawatra will face the arduous task of achieving the effective economic revival that the Southeast Asian country so badly needs despite the lack of exports, growing debt and the high cost of living.
