Two cases of the new Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 have been detected in Thailand. However, authorities have confirmed that both patients have recovered and that no one close to them has been infected.
Dr. Supakit Sirilak, Director General of the Department of Medical Sciences (DMS), has reported that the authorities have discovered that a Thai and a foreigner were infected with XBB.1.5. The patients have since recovered and no family members or close friends have been reported to be infected with this subvariant.

Dr. Supakit stated that XBB.1.5, also known as Kraken, is a combination of two BA2 subvariant strains. It has been reported that XBB.1.5 has become the dominant strain in Europe and the United States.
The DMS said the department will continue to monitor these subvariants to implement appropriate control and prevention policies for future infections. He urged the population to continue applying preventive measures such as the use of masks, hand washing and vaccination, since they are the most effective ways to deal with the disease.
