Thailand chairs the 6th meeting of the BIMSTEC Working Committee

thailand has presided the 6th Meeting of the BIMSTEC Permanent Working Committee (BPWC) to discuss the cooperation mechanism of the regional organization.

Cherdchai Chaivaivid, Director General of the Department of International Economic Affairs, chaired the 6th meeting of the BPWC to discuss the main cooperation mechanisms of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Economic and Technical Cooperation (BIMSTEC). The meeting took place in Bangkok on February 1 and 2.

According to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting successfully concluded four key documents, including the Rules of Procedure for BIMSTEC Core Mechanisms, BIMSTEC Sectoral Mechanisms, BIMSTEC External Relations and the Draft Terms of Reference for the Eminent Persons Group on BIMSTEC’s Future Directions.

According to the ministry, these documents will guide the future direction of BIMSTEC, while establishing the mechanism’s standard operating procedures, leading to a more streamlined and coherent organizational structure. In addition, the meeting discussed the importance of ensuring that BIMSTEC remains relevant, especially in the current context of post-pandemic economic recovery.

Since assuming the BIMSTEC Chairmanship in March 2022, Thailand has already hosted two rounds of BIMSTEC Standing Working Committee meetings, producing many significant outcome papers to be presented at the 23rd Senior Officials Meeting and 19th Ministerial Meeting in March 2023. All members and the secretariat thanked Thailand for hosting the meetings and fostering the spirit of cooperation within BIMSTEC.

Thailand is currently chairing the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Economic and Technical Cooperation (BIMSTEC). It consists of seven members: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand.
