Rebecca Chaptegeni, a runner originally from the Republic of Uganda who competed less than a month ago at the Paris Olympics, died on Thursday in Kenya at the age of 33.

The runner died in the intensive care unit of the University Hospital, due to multiple organ failure, due to burns on 80% of her body; explained a doctor who is part of the hospital staff.

The competitor’s father, Joseph Cheptegei, shared his feelings about the unfortunate news: “(She was) very understanding,” and revealed that he is waiting for justice to be done for such an atrocity.

“The criminal who hurt my daughter is a murderer and still doesn’t know what the authorities are doing. He is still free and could escape,” she shared.

Rebecca’s partner allegedly ended the athlete’s life

Rebecca Chaptegei’s case has sparked outrage, as police reports, which were shared by the AFP news agency, indicate that last Sunday, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, the athlete’s ex-partner, entered Rebecca’s home while she was out.

According to investigations, when the runner returned home with her daughters, the alleged perpetrator sprayed her with a liquid and then set her on fire, after a heated argument, according to statements by police chief Jeremiah ole Kosiom.

After the attack, Dickson Ndiema also suffered burns, less serious than those suffered by the athlete, and he is still in a stable condition, according to the BBC.

Donald Rukare, president of the Uganda Olympic Committee, said on social media that the attack was “a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete.”
