The Mercosur summit in Asunción once again highlights the discrepancies within the South American bloc, especially regarding the relationship with China. The draft of a free trade agreement between Uruguay and the Asian country is a source of discrepancy among the members, especially with Argentina. While Montevideo says that Mercosur must open up to the world, Buenos Aires affirms that the union of the bloc and betting on the production of the four countries must be the strategy.
For China, the attractive markets in Mercosur are Brazil and Argentina, but Uruguay, a politically stable country, could be a perfect gateway to the region. The importance of the Latin American market for Beijing and the influence that the Asian giant has on the politics of the region is the topic that we analyze in this edition of El Debate together with our guests:
