Expansión requested information from TV Azteca and Televisa on the issue but both companies were not available to comment.
Totalplay has sent emails to its customers to notify that Televisa channels such as TUDN, Canal de las Estrellas 2, Tlenovelas, Golden Unicable, Distrito, Telehit, Bandamax, Tlnovelas, DPelícola have been left out of its offer. The release of said programming will be effective on December 19 and is due to the expiration of the transmission rights licenses that both companies had.
To compensate for the departure of Televisa programming, Totalplay has integrated channels such as ITV Deporte, Euronews, Cine Latino, BB News, Kanal D Drama and Pasiones, among others.
Maintaining the right to transmit sports content as well as series and movies has become a complex point for cable companies, because streaming companies increasingly choose to concentrate their audiovisual bets as Premium content.
Televisa would be betting on the total exclusivity of its sports programming for its ViX vertical and for its cable companies Izzi and Sky in order to strengthen its quadruple play offer (pay TV, internet, fixed-mobile telephony and streaming) in an increasingly ever more competitive.
Televisa’s pay TV and fixed internet segment is going through complex times. In the third quarter of this year alone, Izzi’s sales fell 4.3% and it lost 25,000 customers, according to the company’s financial data. While Sky sales fell 6.3% and reported a disconnection of 270,000 users.
TV Azteca also withdraws its content from Televisa
The content company of businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego has not sat idly by. TV Azteca has decided to withdraw part of its programming from the programmatic grid Izzy and Sky.
As of January 1, 2025, Izzi will no longer have the channels: ADN 40, A más, Azteca Uno, Azteca 7 and Azteca Uno; while Sky will only lose Azteca Uno.
TV Azteca’s decision comes a few hours after Televisa decided to withdraw its channels from Totalplay.
However, users will still be able to access TV Azteca and Televisa channels through the open television signal.
