Fiber reinforced polymer wireless network tower in Egypt


Telecom Egypt, the country’s first integrated telecom operator, in cooperation with Huawei Technologies, has announced the commissioning of the first eco-friendly wireless network tower made of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP).

Thanks to this cooperation, Telecom Egypt becomes the first operator in Africa to install this ecological tower. The material used to build the tower emits less CO2 than steel, the alternative. Very resistant to wind and high temperatures, the tower is about 18 m high, with a special camouflage fence made of environmentally friendly materials. It supports wireless network antennas and radio units equipped with the latest energy saving technologies and partially powered by solar cells.

Telecom Egypt Managing Director and CEO Adel Hamed stated that the deployment of this type of mobile site in Egypt is unprecedented. It highlights the efforts of all those responsible for the project and their ability to execute the entire site in a timely and consistent manner, in accordance with the highest international standards of ecological quality.

Hamed further explained that Telecom Egypt’s green sites also incorporate the latest radio access network technologies, such as radio units optimized to deliver maximum performance with 40% less power consumption than traditional sites.

These new technologies also contribute to improving signal quality by approximately 20% compared to normal antennas, meaning fewer base stations need to be installed, thereby reducing the environmental footprint and one step closer to environmental sustainability, added Hamed.

Jim Liu, CEO of Huawei Egypt, confirmed that the company is focused on the development of information and communication technology infrastructure in Egypt. Therefore, Huawei has joined Telecom Egypt, one of the largest telecommunications companies in Egypt and the Middle East.

Liu added that Huawei is willing to provide suites of innovative energy-saving technologies to build a sustainable low-carbon future. He also noted that recent studies show that FRP poles produce 43% fewer carbon dioxide emissions, compared to steel, and also cut end-to-end energy consumption by nearly half during manufacturing and installation. transport.

Liu also explained that energy solutions for green sites rely on passive cooling, which eliminates the need for air conditioning and thus results in a 47% reduction in energy consumption compared to sites with equipment rooms. Finally, Liu pointed out that the center is equipped with solar panels that provide about 2 kilowatts, which means an additional 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
