Algeria’s current president, Abdelmayid Tebune, has been re-elected to office with 94.65 percent of the vote in the elections held this Saturday.

Tebune has obtained 5,329,253 votes, according to the president of the Independent National Election Authority (ANIE), Mohamed Charfi, quoted by the official APS news agency.

The current president is thus far behind the second most voted candidate, Abdelaali Hasani Cherif, candidate of the Peace Society Movement, who received 178,797 votes, or 3.17 percent. Third place went to Yucef Auchiche, with 122,146 votes (2.16 percent). Auchiche is the candidate of the Front of Socialist Forces.

The turnout was 48.03 percent nationwide and 19.57 percent in the Algerian community abroad, according to the news portal Tout sur l’Algerie. 5,630,196 of the 24,351,551 people eligible to vote cast ballots, according to Charfi, who did not provide data on spoiled or blank votes.

Charfi stressed that the election campaign was conducted in a calm manner and in “excellent conditions”, while highlighting the equidistance between the three candidates by ANIE. It was an “honest and transparent” election, according to Charfi, who thanked the work of the media, security forces, judges, officials and consular services.
