June 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of Algeria, Abdelmayid Tebune, has affirmed that the country “is not a source of threat or aggression against anyone” during military maneuvers in Yelfa, south of the capital, Algiers, from where he stressed that Algeria “is a fortress of peace and security”.
“Since independence, Algeria has not been a source of threat or aggression against anyone,” he said, before stressing that “it is not a secret to anyone in the world that gaining strength is one of the priorities to protect sovereignty against the attempts to threaten stability in the region”.
“We will work to make the best use of material and human capacities to protect our borders and strategic locations, as well as to combat illegal migration and drug trafficking and counterfeit currency,” he said, according to a statement published by the Algerian Presidency to through their website.
Thus, Tebune has emphasized that “the contexts in the region” increase the “determination” of the authorities to “modernize and control the defense system and equipment”, before showing his “deep satisfaction” with “the level reached by the army”.
Tensions have increased in recent years between Morocco and Algeria, especially over their differences over Western Sahara. Thus, Algiers broke off its diplomatic relations with Rabat in 2021, while it later broke the Treaty of Friendship with Spain after the endorsement of the Executive of Pedro Sánchez to the Moroccan autonomy plan over the former Spanish colony.
