Team ASOBI became known for their work on VR titles and especially the Astro Bot franchise. The studio has earned the admiration of PlayStation fans and thanks to the results it is working on its most ambitious project, of which more details have just been revealed.
PlayStation Studios’ most Japanese-influenced studio appeared in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz to talk more about the company’s culture, as well as interesting details about their next project.
What caught the most attention is that the head of the studio, Nicolas Doucet, not only reiterated that the developer’s next project will be “the biggest to date”, but that it will also be “full-fledged commercial”, which means which, at least, will not be any technical demo.

Team ASOBI experiments with new technologies
Doucet recalled that with Astro’s Playroom they wanted to prove to themselves that they were capable of creating a traditional game with a controller and not virtual reality, like their previous works.
Fortunately, the commitment to being the first experience that PlayStation 5 users would have with the system did not overwhelm them and rather they used it to gain confidence.
The studio not only gained prestige, but its size also grew, going from 35 employees in 2020 to 60 today, and it is expected to reach 100 employees.
Doucet mentioned that they have a group for production in which 90% of the staff works, but that they also want another for research and development with which they can explore new ideas and even start other projects.
Interestingly, the staff is rotating between these 2 groups in order for staff to come up with new concepts and experiment with new technologies.

Will TEAM ASOBI’s new game be virtual reality?
There are still not many details regarding gameplay or IP of what his next project will be, but in the interview the studio praised the benefits of the DualSense and how it has become his “special weapon”, suggesting that his next project will make use of the characteristics of the command. This could suggest that this new game will be traditional in that sense; however, it is not ruled out that it is a PlayStation VR2 title, especially due to the comment made about new technologies.
“We like to put a spin on any new technology. There’s the obvious way to use it, which is the first thing we try, and then we try to use it in ways you’re not supposed to. That doesn’t lead to interesting places,” Doucet said. .
In case you missed it: Team ASOBI’s work culture is free from crunch.
In terms of style, Team ASOBI wants their games to feel Japanese, something that is not achieved by visual style or genre, but by their workmanship and quality of play. At the same time, the studio wants the project to appeal to international audiences.
Beyond this, we know thanks to a vacancy that the Japanese studio is working on a new 3D action game that could well be a new adventure of astro bot.
