The Taliban confirmed on Wednesday the appointment of Abdul Kabir as the new acting prime minister after the current incumbent, Mullah Mohamad Hassan Akhund, fell ill, with no further information on his state of health. .
“The Prime Minister of the Islamic Emirate, Mullah Mohamad Hassan Ajund, is in Kandahar for a short period of treatment and rest,” Taliban spokesman and Afghan Deputy Culture Minister Zabihullah Mujahid said in a message posted on his account. on the social network Twitter.
Thus, he has indicated that Kabir has been appointed on an interim basis and has stressed that the position “does not face obstacles”, before adding that “this is something normal at the governance level. “No one should try to stir up concern and make propaganda nor the citizens should be worried”, has settled.
Mohamad Hasán Haqyar, Kabir’s chief of protocol, has indicated that Ajund has not participated in public events for months due to a health problem and has stressed that what until now was his “number two” had been in charge of his main functions , including meetings with senior foreign officials, as reported by the Afghan television network Ariana.
Kabir was an important figure in the negotiations for the 2020 peace agreement with the United States, signed in Qatar. The Taliban have not released details about Ajund’s illness, although sources have said in the past that he suffers from heart problems.
