Taliban bar ex-president Hamid Karzai's brother from leaving country over legal dispute

Nov. 6 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Taliban have confirmed this Sunday an order to prevent the brother of former Afghan President Hamid Karzai from leaving Afghanistan, although they have denied that he is under arrest, as several media in the country had reported hours before.

Mahmud Karzai was intercepted at the Kabul airport in the middle of a legal dispute with his partner Hamid Helmandi, a former adviser to the last president of the Afghan government, Ashraf Ghani, before the Taliban’s conquest of the country that ended on August 15 last year.

The deputy spokesman for the fundamentalist movement, Bilal Karimi, explained to Tolo News that Mahmud Karzai, also a former Minister of Urban Development, has been banned from leaving the country due to a “legal dispute”.

Karimi has denied that Karzai was arrested on his way to the United Arab Emirates, without giving further details.
