Sep. 25 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of Kyrgyzstan announced this Sunday an agreement with the authorities of Tajikistan to end the border conflict that includes the dismantling of a total of eight checkpoints, four for each country.
“I hope all the points of the signed protocol are applied. Peace and agreement will come to Kyrgyz and Tajik soil,” the president of the Kyrgyz National Security Council, Kamchibek Tashiev, told the AKIPress news agency.
The agreement will allow residents of the Batken and Leilek districts to return to their homes, Tashiev explained. For this, the Ministry of Emergency Situations will provide means of transport.
“We are going to organize everything. I can guarantee you that from today the borders will remain peaceful,” Tashiev stressed.
The protocol has been signed by the presidents of the national security commissions of both countries with the main objective of ending hostilities, tackling the causes of the conflict and preventing it from recurring in the future. In the designated areas there will be no military or civilian presence, according to the agreement.
In addition, both parties have agreed to speed up the work of the border demarcation commission “to resolve pending issues,” Tashiev explained.
The armed conflict between the two countries began on September 14 and has resulted in the death of 62 people on the Kyrgyz side and another 46 on the Tajik side. In addition, 140,000 Kyrgyz had to flee their homes.
