Taiwan signs an MOU to help Haiti recover

The Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the Taiwanese Disaster Relief Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding to help Haiti restore agricultural production and alleviate food shortages in affected areas of the Caribbean country because of an earthquake and a storm last year, reported the MOFA it’s a statement.

Under the agreement, the foundation will contribute US$500,000 for one year to help Haiti develop its rice production and alleviate the food shortage crisis, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development of the Republic of Haiti, says the MOFA statement.

The Taiwan International Development and Cooperation Fund, which has an agricultural technical mission in Haiti, will be in charge of implementing the project, creating employment opportunities for the inhabitants of the affected areas, improving the income of Haitian farmers and realizing the vision of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of eradicating hunger, achieving food security and agricultural development, the MOFA statement said.

On August 14, 2021, an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck Haiti, followed by Hurricane Grace, causing devastation to infrastructure and agriculture and leaving nearly a million people affected with food shortages, according to the notice.

Taiwan and the Republic of Haiti have maintained diplomatic relations for 66 years, and bilateral cooperation covers a wide range of fields, from agriculture and energy to health care and sustainable development.
