Taipei ( / Agencies) – Msgr. Gabriel Ly Chen ying, renowned theologian and philosopher, the last religious to preside over Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei, has died at the age of 95. He died on February 18 at the San José de Chiayi hospital, where he was hospitalized for 10 years due to his precarious state of health.
The funeral will be held on February 25 and will be officiated by the Bishop of Chiayi, Monsignor. Norbert Pu. The local press reports that at yesterday’s mass, Fr. Zhao Yongji highlighted Bishop Ly’s commitment to the Church and his work as an educator.
He was born in 1929 in Tianjin, on the Chinese mainland, and was ordained a priest in Italy in 1955. He moved to Taiwan, where he served as Secretary General of the Diocese of Tainan and began teaching at various universities on the island. In 1970 he joined the Chiayi diocese to take up the post of secretary general of the Taiwan Bishops’ Conference.
He presided over the Fu Jen Catholic University between 1992 and 1996. Since 2013 he lived in retirement for health reasons. Bishop Ly was an expert on Western and Eastern culture and published nearly 50 books on theology and philosophy. He is remembered for his service to the Catholic Church and to the academic community.
