Taiwan detects 29 fighters and eight Chinese Army ships in its vicinity

April 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Taiwan authorities reported this Saturday that they have detected 29 fighter jets and eight ships of the Chinese Armed Forces in the vicinity of the island in the context of increased tension between the parties.

Initially, the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense has indicated that at 6:00 a.m. (local time) the presence of eight ships and eight planes was recorded around Taiwan and that three of them have crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and They have entered the island's air defense identification zone.

“Taiwan's armed forces have monitored the activities with our joint surveillance systems and have sent appropriate resources to respond accordingly,” Defense added in a post on the social network X, formerly Twitter.

Later, the Ministry itself reported in another publication that it had detected the activity of another 21 aircraft, “including J-16, Y-8 and drones” around 8:15 a.m. (local time). On this occasion, 17 of them “have crossed the median line and its extension, entered (their) northern, central and southwestern ADIZ.”

The situation around Taiwan worsened last year, after the visit of the now former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, which was followed by a visit to Washington by a Taiwanese delegation.

Ties between China and the island of Taiwan, which it considers another province under its sovereignty, were severed in 1949, after the forces of the nationalist Kuomintang party suffered defeat in the civil war against the Communist Party and moved to the archipelago. Relations were reestablished only at a business and informal level in the late 1980s.
