MADRID 6 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of Taiwan, Lai Ching Te, this Wednesday congratulated the Republican candidate for the White House and former president of the United States, Donald Trump, for becoming the virtual winner of the presidential elections and highlighted the importance of the relations between the parties to confront the growing threat from China.
The Taiwanese president, also known as William Lai, has said he trusts “the long-standing relationship between Taiwan and the United States,” which is based on “shared values and interests.” “It will continue to be a cornerstone for regional stability and will lead to greater prosperity for all of us,” he stated in a message broadcast through his account on the X social network.
The United States is the most important ally of Taiwan, a territory that China continues to consider another province under its sovereignty. Thus, in recent years, Washington has become Taipei’s main supplier of weapons and indispensable support in the face of a potential attack from China.
However, Trump already raised alarm bells during the election campaign by suggesting that Taiwan would have to pay the United States for defense aid provided. In addition, he has accused the island – which has become one of the main obstacles in the relationship with Beijing – of having stolen “the chip industry” from the North American country.
