Taiwan confirms the visit of a second delegation of German legislators to the island

TAIPEI, Oct. 20 (DPA/EP) –

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed on Thursday the plans of the German Bundestag to send a new delegation to visit the island, less than three weeks after a group of German lawmakers visited Taipei.

Thus, the delegation sent by Berlin would land on the island on Sunday and stay there until Wednesday, as reported by the Taiwanese Foreign Affairs spokeswoman, Joanne Ou.

The group – made up of six parliamentarians from different formations and led by Peter Heidt, a member of the Free Democratic Party – is scheduled to meet with the island’s president, Tsai Ing Wen, and other representatives of the Taiwanese Executive.

According to Ou, the main objective of the German delegation is to address the main problems related to Human Rights in Taiwan, given that Teipei and Berlin “share fundamental values”.

Germany already sent a group of lawmakers to Taiwan in early October amid tensions with China, heightened after the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, in early August.

Taiwan has had an independent government since 1949, but China considers the island to be part of its territory and opposes any form of official contact between Taiwan and other countries.
