Taiwan announces another $20 million donation to help Turkey

Taiwan Vice Foreign Minister Alexander Tah-ray Yui advertisement in a press conference that the Taiwanese government will make a monetary donation of 20 million dollars to Turkey to help that country deal with the aftermath of the devastating earthquake.

Yui also stated that the account set up by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to collect private donations has reached a total of NT$1.18 billion (US$38.6 million).

The first donation, of US$20 million, which included US$2 million in public funds, was announced on February 18. The second donation will go to four major entities, Yui said.

About $1 million has been set aside for the Ankara government to purchase mobile kitchens to prepare meals for people in disaster-affected areas, Yui said.

Another five million US dollars will be donated to the Turkish Red Crescent, a humanitarian organization that provides relief to vulnerable and needy people, the deputy minister explained.

In addition, US$5 million will go to the Turkish National Association of People with Disabilities to purchase mobile hospital rooms and wheelchairs, while another US$9 million will go to the Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (SGDD-ASAM) to build mobile classrooms and clinics in earthquake-affected areas, Yui added.

Also present during the press conference was the representative of the Turkish Trade Office in Taipei, Muhammed Berdibek, who expressed his gratitude for the help provided by the Taiwanese people after the earthquake.

Goodwill transcends language barriers and unites people, Berdibek said, adding that the people of Turkey will always remember friendship and kindness.
