The new interim authorities established in Syria after the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime have thanked several countries for reopening their embassies in Damascus and have expressed their desire to maintain “good relations” with “all countries that respect the popular will.” in Syria.
“The Syrian people will not forget these honorable positions and we hope to build good relations with all countries that respect the popular will, the sovereignty of the Syrian State and the unity of its territories,” said the interim government, headed by Mohamed al Bashir.
Thus, he thanked Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman and Italy for reopening their legations – something Rome did in July – before adding that he has “direct promises” of Qatar and Turkey to do the same in the near future, after the fall of Al Assad following an offensive by jihadists and rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS).
Al Bashir, who headed the National Salvation Government appointed by HTS in the province of Idlib (northwest) in the years before the offensive, has promised that the new authorities will “guarantee the rights of all peoples” and has called to the millions of Syrian refugees to return to the country.
The offensive in Syria, launched on November 27 from the province of Idlib, allowed jihadists and rebels to take the capital and put an end to the regime of the Al Assad family, in power since 1971 – first with Hafez al Assad (1971-2000). ) and later with his son, Bashar–, in the face of a constant withdrawal of government troops, backed by Russia and Iran.
