The autonomous Kurdish authorities in northeastern Syria have condemned the “attempts to create conflict and cause chaos” in the city of Raqqa, after some people fired indiscriminately during the event this Thursday in which the new flag was raised. of the country after the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime last week.
“We condemn the attempt by some parties to fuel clashes during the independence flag-raising ceremony in Raqqa, and ask the population to be careful with calls for incitement that threaten security and stability. We affirm that we will continue fulfilling our duty to protect the region and its people,” the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has declared on its X social network account.
The event took place this Thursday afternoon when “the People’s Democratic Council has decided to raise the flag of independence in all the institutions of the AANES, affirming the unity and national identity of Syria” and has resulted in the death of a citizen and four others injured, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
As explained by the authorities in a statement published on their website, “some people took advantage of this national event and tried to cause chaos by provoking our forces and shooting indiscriminately at” the people gathered, causing injuries among civilians and some members of the forces. security.
For his part, the chief commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, has assured that the organization is “closely following the unfortunate events” in Raqqa and that it is “committed to addressing all problems peacefully.” “We will not allow any violation,” he said on social networks.
“Raqqa and its people deserve a dignified and safe life, and we will spare no effort to achieve it. (…) The common enemy of the Syrians has fallen, and with the fall of that criminal regime, the way has been paved for us to resolve all our problems at the dialogue table,” he added.
