Synology has released the new version of its operating system, DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.2.2designed to improve reliability and efficiency in data management. This update addresses potential vulnerabilities that could affect system performance and optimizes efficiency in processing multimedia files in decentralized data strategies.
“In DSM 7.2.2, we have carried out a thorough analysis of key subsystems in data management, devoting significant resources to redesigning DSM, support packages and mobile applications, making them more scalable and reliable,” comments Gento Pariente, Regional Marketing Manager.
DSM 7.2.2 introduces significant improvements to system reliability. Full restore from C2 Storage via Hyper Backup is now four times faster, similar to the Active Protect innovations introduced at Computex, significantly reducing business recovery time (RTO) (the time it takes to recover from a critical data disaster). Hybrid Share folders and data transfers have become more resilient to server power interruptions. In addition, SSO login availability has been improved by expanding support for Entra ID (formerly known as Azure Active Directory).
Data security is a priority at DSM 7.2.2This update strengthens file system capabilities, enabling automatic repair of bitflip errors and improving the reliability of adaptive multi-factor authentication. Security for immutable snapshots has also been strengthened, mitigating a potential risk that allowed administrators to unlock snapshots by manually changing attributes, potentially opening up the possibility for attackers who gained these permissions to make changes to the snapshots, such as unintended encryption.
DSM 7.2.2 Synology Image Assistant marks a strategic shift by offloading media processing to clients and mobile devices, leveraging media decoding and encoding capabilities to reduce unnecessary server resource usage. By installing Synology Image Assistant Extension and the desktop app, users can enjoy up to 2.5x faster thumbnail generation performance compared to server-side processing. This improvement scales efficiently as the number of concurrent users increases by offloading these processes to clients typically more capable of hardware for such complex operations.
DSM is the operating system of the Synology Home and Business NAS and its update, for compatible models, is completely free.
