MADRID Dec. 20 () –
The Swiss authorities announced this Thursday that they will represent the interests of Ecuador in Venezuela at the request of the Ecuadorian Government after it broke diplomatic relations with Caracas following the presidential elections in which Chavismo gave victory to Nicolás Maduro.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry has reported through a statement that the head of Swiss diplomacy, Ignazio Cassis, has signed in the Swiss city of Bern the agreement with the Ecuadorian ambassador to Switzerland, Verónica Bustamante Ponce, to guarantee the diplomatic channel and consular between both countries.
“Consular tasks will be carried out by a section for the protection of Ecuadorian interests, which legally forms an integral part of the Swiss Embassy, in the building of the Ecuadorian Embassy in Caracas,” explained the ministerial portfolio.
It is worth mentioning that Switzerland also currently represents the interests of Ecuador in Mexico and of Mexico in Ecuador since the raid by Ecuadorian police officers at the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest the country’s former vice president Jorge Glas Espinel, who was a refugee and processing asylum for persecution and harassment.
