Swiss snowboarder Sophie Hediger died in an avalanche in a Swiss mountain resort at the age of 26.

Sophie Hediger, a Swiss snowboarder who competed in the Winter Olympics in Beijing 2022, has died after an avalanche in a mountain resort in Switzerland, the country’s ski federation reported Tuesday. The incident occurred on Monday at Arosa station.

The 26-year-old athlete competed in the Beijing Games in women’s snowboard cross and in the mixed team version of the same test.

Hediger achieved his first two podiums in the World Cup in the 2023-24 season. His best result was a second place in St. Moritz in January.

“We are shocked and our thoughts are with the Sophie’s familyto whom we offer our deepest condolences,” Swiss-Ski CEO Walter Reusser said in a statement. “(She lost her life) tragically, brutally and too soon.”
