Sweden summons Iranian ambassador to protest execution of Swedish-Iranian dissident Habib Chaab

May 6. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Government of Sweden has informed that the Iranian ambassador in the country has been summoned to protest the execution of the Swedish-Iranian dissident Habib Chaab in the Islamic republic for the crime of terrorism.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a strong condemnation of the execution of the death penalty. The death penalty is an inhuman and irreversible punishment and Sweden, together with the rest of the EU, condemns its application in all circumstances,” according to the call note collected by the newspaper ‘Aftonbladet’.

Chaab, founder of the separatist group the Movement for the Arab Struggle for the Liberation of Ahvaz, which Iran accuses of carrying out numerous attacks in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, including a 2018 attack on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard that resulted in almost about thirty dead.

However, the Iranian Justice blames his activities for the death of more than 450 people since 2005 in the province of Khuzestan and its surroundings to achieve its independence.

In addition, they accused him of working for numerous espionage services such as the CIA (of the United States), the Mossad (of Israel), Sapo (of Sweden) and other countries in the region.

After living in Sweden for 14 years, Chaab disappeared in Turkey in 2020, under unclear circumstances, only to reappear in Iran, already in custody.

The trial took place in mid-March, when his death sentence was upheld; the Swedish government stated that he was making every effort to negotiate with the Iranian authorities, who only considered him as an Iranian citizen and therefore an internal matter.
