In recent years, video games have become the world’s largest form of entertainment and therefore a multi-billion dollar business. Success as a business, but also as a creative work, has left its mark in some countries and one of them decided that it was time to give important recognition to the creators.

Sweden recognises 15 video games and their studios as cultural heritage

According to a report by Gamesindustry.bizthe Swedish Ministry of Culture named 15 video games and their respective developers as cultural heritage of the nation, this in recognition of their cultural impact and the success achieved in recent years, not only locally as a creative industry, but also globally since they include games and companies that are huge today.

Per Strömbäck, a representative of the Swedish Ministry, said: “Video games are culture for gamers, who engage with them in a similar way to the public in other art forms. The same is true for game developers who have the same driving forces as other creators: the desire to express themselves, create something new and communicate with their audience. Games also reflect the world we live in and have a rich history that is now being recognised by museums and other institutions.”
