The main suspect in the attack carried out on Saturday with an alleged homemade bomb against the Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, has been brought before the courts on Monday as the investigations against him progress.
The 24-year-old, identified as Ryuji Kimura, hails from Hyogo Prefecture and was arrested on Saturday right after the incident occurred. Authorities are now investigating whether he threw two cylindrical objects at the president, who was unharmed, and whether he had made a homemade bomb.
The device, which exploded shortly after its launch and expelled white smoke, was detected by agents on the move, although a second similar device was later found among the suspect’s possessions, according to information from the newspaper ‘The Japan Times’.
Now, the investigators consider that these objects constitute home-made bombs and have warned that Kimura also had a knife with him. The security forces have also seized a mobile phone and a lighter.
The agents have proceeded to search Kimura’s home, an operation that has lasted eight hours and has allowed them to find gunpowder, materials for the manufacture of explosives and other objects.
The incident, registered in the city of Wakayama, has occurred less than a year after former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated during a rally, an issue that has called into question the security that politicians and senior officials have. charges in the country.
Kishida himself assured on Sunday that “violent acts will not be tolerated” against candidates for the elections and has urged increased security measures during the campaign.
