( Spanish) – The Supreme Court of Justice of Mexico ruled this Wednesday to keep in prison Mario Aburto Martínez, the only man convicted of the murder in March 1994 of Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta, then candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) for the presidency of Mexico .
By a majority of three votes, the first chamber of the Supreme Court decided to reinstate the amparo trial that, in October 2023, had annulled the sentence against Aburto and had opened the door for him to leave prison.
requested a comment from Aburto’s legal representative, without having received a response so far.
Aburto was arrested at the crime scene on March 23, 1994 in the Lomas Taurinas neighborhood, in the border city of Tijuana. He and his family have insisted on his innocence. Aburto has also argued that he suffered torture at the time of his arrest.
Colosio’s crime is considered the most high-profile political assassination in Mexico in almost 100 years, since then-president Álvaro Obregón was gunned down in celebration of his re-election in 1928.
