Support from ECLAC in the digitization process and incorporation of 4.0 technologies. in the agriculture

With the aim of analyzing the digitalization strategy at the level of peasant family farming, and within the framework of the project Digital Technologies for a Sustainable and Inclusive Agricultural Revolution in Countries in Transition, on August 4, 2022, the visit of the ECLAC team to the Los Tilos experimental station of the Agricultural Research Institute (INIA). In this field, located in the commune of Buin, a Smart Field specialized in the digitization of agricultural land is being developed. This station operates as a public-private cooperative ecosystem dedicated to the testing and validation of various digital platforms, as well as to the training of producers and extension agents.

Among the technologies incorporated in the Smart Field are real-time sensing and data generation and satellite monitoring through fully autonomous drones. These technologies are used to analyze water deficit in plantations, relative humidity and soil temperature, crop diseases through the identification, enumeration and phenotyping of weeds, and even to improve the safety of farms. since real-time surveillance is allowed, even at night.

This project is promoted by ECLAC, OECD and the European Union, together with the Ibero-American Network for the Digitization of Agriculture and Livestock (RIDAG) and aims to support the productive transition towards a more sustainable and efficient agriculture in Latin America, through the adoption of digital technologies.
