Super typhoon ‘Noru’, known in the Philippines as ‘Karding’, is heading straight for the Philippine capital Manila and has already brought heavy rain and sustained strong winds of 195 km/h and gusts of up to 240 km/h.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has reported that the storm is already very close to the Polillo Islands, east of the main Philippine island, Luzon.
Its trajectory clearly takes it to the west and it is moving at about 20 kilometers per hour, so it is expected to make landfall in Luzon on Sunday night.
Pagasa has issued a red alert for possible serious flooding for Polillo, Bordeaux, Panukulan, Patnanungan and Jomalig, in the province of Quezon. In addition, in the next 12 hours there is a Level 4 alert, which could cause significant material damage and pose a threat to life on the Polillo Islands.
There have also been alerts for moderate to heavy rains in Manila, Manila, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite and Batangas.
More than 1,200 people are isolated in Calabarzón and Bicol, as reported by the Philippine Coast Guard and collected by ABS-CBN television.
Another 300 have already had to leave their homes in Dingalan, in the province of Aurora, according to the National Council for Risk Reduction and Disaster Management (CNRRGD), which warns of upcoming evacuations in the area.
Meanwhile, the Philippine president, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., has announced the suspension of activity in the public sector and in education for this Monday on the island of Luzon. Marcos has posted on Facebook that he has approved the CNRRGD recommendation.
