Sudanese authorities sentence man to hanging for “collaborating with rebel forces”

May 24. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Sudanese authorities have issued this Thursday a hanging sentence against an individual accused of “collaborating with rebel forces” in the framework of the fighting between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), declared in rebellion since the start of the conflict in April 2023 and that have left the country plunged into a serious humanitarian crisis.

“The Eastern Al Gadarif Criminal Court (…) has handed down a conviction against the accused (…) for crimes related to provoking war against the State and aiding and participating in criminal and terrorist organizations and groups, has been sentenced to death by hanging,” reads a statement shared by the Sudanese news agency SUNA.

The man was arrested after the intelligence services began to suspect that he supported or belonged to the RSF, after which he “admitted to having sent intelligence information to the enemy.”

Furthermore, he went so far as to suggest the “cleansing” of the city of Omdurman or the “erasure” of the city of Shendi. His lawyer had asked the court to reduce the sentence using the argument that two of his brothers are enlisted in the Army.

The war broke out on April 15, 2023 due to strong disagreements regarding the integration process of the paramilitary group – now declared a terrorist organization – within the Armed Forces, a situation that caused the definitive derailment of the transition opened in 2019 after the overthrow of the Omar Hasan al Bashir regime.

The United Nations estimates that at least 16,000 people have died and 33,000 have been injured since the outbreak of the war in Sudan on April 15, 2023, but the international institution reminds that these figures are enormously conservative. The United States has taken as approximate some estimates that speak of at least 150,000 deaths.
