Sudan Summons Ethiopian Ambassador for His Comments on Alleged Support for the TPLF

Aug. 31 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Sudan on Wednesday summoned Ethiopia’s ambassador, Yibeltal Aemeru, after he said that Ethiopian forces had shot down a plane that had entered from Sudan and was allegedly carrying weapons for Tigray Popular Front for the Liberation (TPLF) rebels.

The person in charge of African Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, Fadl Abdulá Fadl, has transferred to Ambassador Aemeru the discontent of the Government of Khartoum for those statements he made this week in a media outlet, reports the Sudanese news agency SUNA.

“Making these baseless accusations is contrary to the usual diplomatic traditions in communication with the official authorities of the country of representation, especially since the leadership in the two countries seeks to strengthen relations between them,” the statement said.

Both countries have traditionally maintained somewhat complicated relations, even more so since the clashes began in November 2020 in northern Ethiopia between government forces and Tigray rebels, who according to Addis Ababa are being supported by Sudan, something that these always they have denied.

In turn, both countries are involved in several disputes, including a territorial dispute over the fertile Al Fashaga border region and a more recent one, from a decade ago, over the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a hydroelectric project and one of the most expensive of the recent history of the African continent, which has also raised diplomatic tensions with Egypt.
