Sudan Closes Major Roads in Khartoum Ahead of Coup Anniversary Protests

Oct. 25 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Sudanese security forces have proceeded this Tuesday to close the main roads into and out of the capital, Khartoum, in view of the protests planned for this day on the occasion of the anniversary of the coup that took place in October 2021.

The country’s military authorities have indicated that more than a hundred people have died during clashes in the framework of protests since then, so the pressure on the military junta has been increasing from the international community, especially after the rebound of intercommunity violence in the south of the country.

For its part, the US government has threatened to impose sanctions on “all those who undermine a transition to a civilian government,” according to information in the newspaper ‘Sudan Tribune’.

The Secretary of State of the North American country, Antony Blinken, has stressed the importance of ending the “military regime” in Sudan one year after the coup that “ended the democratic transition” and has pointed out that “time is essential to reach an agreement that will establish a framework for the transition to a civilian government that can carry out the democratic transition that Sudan needs”.

In this sense, he clarified that precisely the formation of a new civilian government is the “key to unblock the international assistance” sent to the African country.

On October 25, 2021, the leaders of an Army faction — which had the support of several armed groups — overthrew the transitional government established as a result of the agreement between the military and civil society forces after the fall of the former dictator. Omar Hassan al Bashir in April 2019. However, the current military leaders have announced an agreement in principle to cede power to a civilian government, but not without first obtaining guarantees about their future.
