The head of the Army and president of the Sovereign Transitional Council of Sudan, Abdelfatá al Burhan, has called on the country’s civilians in a televised speech to take up arms to fight against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The Sudanese Army has indicated that Al Burhan has announced a general mobilization. The military chief has demanded that young people “do not hesitate or delay”, while he has asked all those who can defend the country to “play this national role in their place of residence or join the military units”.
The objective is “to win the honor of defending the survival of the Sudanese state, against which the conspiracies have collapsed internally and externally,” says the portal ‘Sudan Ajbar’.
Al Burhan has indicated that “the whole world is watching the crimes committed against the Sudanese people”, in various parts of the country, including the capital, Khartoum, “tearing the unity of this country, fragmenting its social fabric and displacing its people”. in order to “fulfill the personal aspirations of a specific group that rebelled against the State”.
“This rebel group has sought the support of gangs that have violated honor and have raided homes, using them as the headquarters of their operations. They have looted property and belongings of citizens, destroyed the structure of State services,” he said, denouncing “crimes of war and against humanity”.
These statements come after al Burhan announced that he was joining the truce on the occasion of Eid al Adha, one of the most important rites in the Islamic calendar. Hours before, the leader of the RSF, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias ‘Hemedti’, declared “a unilateral armistice for the two days of Arafah and the first day of Eid al Adha, except in cases of self-defense.”
