The governments of Sudan and South Sudan have agreed to form a joint committee of the ministries of energy and oil of both countries to resume the flow of oil between the two territories in order to ensure unhindered pumping, which is crucial for the economies of Khartoum and Juba.
Sudanese army chief and chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has met with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir in Juba to discuss the issue of oil transportation, Sudanese news agency SUNA reported.
They also discussed the formation of a mechanism to deliver humanitarian aid to the Sudanese region of South Kordofan through Juba International Airport. Kiir, for his part, stressed his support “for the Sudanese people to achieve security and stability,” noting that he would do everything possible to stop the war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
This conflict has been the trigger for the interruption of oil production and exports in Sudan. In addition, South Sudanese oil reaches a facility in the Red Sea through a pipeline that crosses Sudanese territory.
