Storms and technical failures delay flights in New York and Washington

Thunderstorms and equipment failures at a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) facility on Sunday caused significant delays for travelers on the US East Coast, where authorities had to cancel flight arrivals in Washington and New York.

As the afternoon progressed, flights resumed from the Washington area after completing communications repairs, the FAA reported.

However, delays continued at several New York airports, forced by thunderstorms.

The FAA said there were delays due to thunderstorms at the Hartsfield–Jackson airports in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Newark, and New York.

“The facility activated a backup system,” the federal agency explained in a statement about the delays in the Washington area.

FlightAware, a website that monitors flights, said 39% of departures from Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey and 47% of departures from LaGuardia in New York were delayed.
