The gaming market today is all about choice, and the more there is, the better. Formats for organizing and distributing content increasingly consider users with options such as groups of friends or family. In the case of Steam, one of its pilot programs has become a reality and is now available to all users of Valve’s platform.
How to make a Steam family group and what are its benefits?
Steam announced the official launch of Family Groups which are now available to all users of this platform, the most successful on PC, as of today. The option has left its Beta phase and you can now join other players so that you can access their games and they can access yours. First of all, you should know that to form a Steam family group you can do so from the client, a mobile device or a browser, of course with your account active and logged in.
These Steam groups allow up to 6 members, one who organizes and is responsible for it and 5 invited users, although it is not necessary to comply with this number, it can be less. Once the group is formed, the home screen of each member will show the “Family Library” tab where all the games available for download and use will be found.
How does family sharing work on Steam?
In case you didn’t know, this means that the games owned by each player in your family group will be available to all members at no additional cost. Let’s say one member of your group has ELDEN RING and you don’t, then you’ll be able to access their copy, download the game to your PC and play it, plus you’ll have your own save file, achievement list, and tools.
Family sharing has some restrictions. For example, if 2 or more members want to play the same game at the same time, there must be the same number of copies in the digital library. For example: if you want to play Half-Life and 2 other players want to play it at the same time, there must be 3 copies of that game in the group. If there is one, only one user can play.
On the other hand, it is important to consider that the user responsible for the family group must establish whether the invited player and new member is an adult or a minor, so that the latter have restrictions regarding purchases and content, in addition to other options available in the parental control section.
Finally, Steam announced that not all games are available for family lending and the system will indicate to all members if this is the case for any of the titles available in the library. This is a decision of each developer and publisher and is out of Valve’s hands, so if this is the case for a game that interests you or them there will be nothing that can be done, it will only be available to the original owner of the copy.
