Sri Lankan Prime Minister announces his resignation

July 9 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced his resignation as Prime Minister of the country this Saturday, the day of the outbreak of a popular revolution after months of protests against the Government due to the devastating economic crisis that is plaguing the nation.

In a concise message posted on his Twitter account, the Prime Minister announced his departure from office “to ensure the continuation of the Government, including the safety of all citizens.”

Wickremesinghe has thus accepted the recommendations of the extraordinary meeting held this afternoon with the leaders of the parties related to the Government “to make way for a Government of concentration”.

“To facilitate this I will resign as Prime Minister,” he said.

It should be remembered that the recommendation of the political leaders also pointed to the resignation of the country’s president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, whose whereabouts are currently unknown after the seizure of his official residence by the wave of hundreds of thousands of protesters who continue to occupy the streets of the Capital Colombo.
