Sri Lankan president asks Putin for help to acquire oil in the midst of the crisis

The Minister of Investments calls for the resignation of the Prime Minister

July 6. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has asked the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, for help on Wednesday to acquire loans and be able to buy oil in the face of the serious economic crisis that the country is going through.

“I have had very productive talks with President Putin. I have thanked him for all the support received to overcome the challenges and have asked for help in overcoming the current economic problems,” Rajapaksa said in a message on his Twitter account.

Likewise, he has requested that the flights of the Russian company Aeroflot be resumed and has indicated that both have agreed to “strengthen bilateral cooperation in sectors such as tourism, commerce and culture.”

His words come after the country’s prime minister, Ranil Wickramasinghe, warned that the Sri Lankan economy “has completely collapsed”, so the country cannot afford to import oil.

This same Wednesday, the Investment Minister, Dhammika Perera, has requested the resignation of Wickremesinghe, who also holds the position of Finance Minister. Perera has also pointed out that “the political game in which the Prime Minister is immersed must end.”

His request comes two days after Wickremesinghe presented a proposal to collect more taxes, especially from casino owners, something that directly affects Perera, who owns several, according to the ‘Daily Mirror’ newspaper.

As he explained, the prime minister “has put an end to all the projects that could bring some money to the country.” “Since I came to the Government I have seen what is happening, so I have decided to prepare for the worst,” he said.

Perera has denounced that the prime minister lacks a plan for the flow of money into the country. “He does not have a plan to feed people or to bring in dollars,” he stressed.
