The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, Ali Sabry, sent a protest note to Canada on Wednesday over the sanctions imposed against two former Sri Lankan presidents.
“Sri Lanka has expressed its dissatisfaction with the imposition of sanctions against the former reporters Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa,” he said in a statement collected by the news portal NewsWire.
Thus, he specified that during a meeting with the Canadian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, Eric Walsh, Sabry condemned the Canadian government’s measure and warned that the country “is going through a critical situation.”
“The sanctions have been imposed as the country makes efforts to resolve emerging problems and achieve reconciliation,” he pointed out before stating that it could “polarize the population.”
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced on Tuesday the imposition of sanctions against four senior Sri Lankan officials, including the two former presidents, in retaliation for the “violation of Human Rights during the civil war between 1983 and 2009.”
