MADRID Jan. 2 () –
Sales of passenger cars in Spain closed 2024 with an increase of 7.1%, up to 1,016,885 units, recovering the records prior to the pandemic, which allow us to overcome the barrier of one million vehicles after four consecutive years, according to published data this Monday by the National Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (Anfac), the National Association of Sellers of Motor Vehicles, Repair and Spare Parts (Ganvam) and the Association of Official Dealers of Spain (Faconauto).
The good performance of December, with an increase of 28.8% compared to the same month in 2023 and 105,346 units, has allowed these records to be signed thanks to the acceleration of registrations in the private and rental channel.
Specifically, sales to individuals, in the total for the year, have reached 456,993 units, 8.9% more. Likewise, renters registered 186,126 units, with an increase of 36.8%. For its part, sales to companies reached 373,826 units, with a slight decline of 5.1%.
At the same time, sales of light commercial vehicles rose 10.7% in December, with 14,532 units. In the total for the year, 165,847 units are accumulated, with an annual increase of 13.6%.
By channels, during 2024, all obtain increases compared to the previous year. Specifically, sales to companies total 116,466 units, 8.9% more. The self-employed grew by up to 24.1%, with 27,896 sales. And, similarly, the rental channel reached 21,485 units, with a rebound of 8.9%.
For its part, registrations of commercial vehicles, buses, coaches and minibuses in the last month of the year fell by 14.8%, with 2,629 sales. Despite this decrease in December, in 2024 sales manage to grow by 12.5%, with 36,509 new units.
Specifically, by type of vehicle, industrial vehicles reached 32,140 registrations, with an increase of 12%. While the market for buses, coaches and minibuses totals 4,369 units, which represents an increase of 15.9% in the year.
In this context, the average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of passenger cars sold in December remain at 112.2 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled, a figure 0.4% lower than the average emissions of new passenger cars sold in the same month of 2023.
In the total for the year, an average of 116.4 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled is recorded, 0.5% lower than in 2023, still above what is foreseen in the ‘CAFE’ regulations in which it is established that emissions of carbon dioxide will drop to 93.6 grams per kilometer of cars sold in the 27 EU countries from January 1, 2025.
“We continue on the path of recovering the sales volume of 1.2 million units that Spain must aspire to as the fourth European economy. To achieve this, it is necessary both to maintain the plans to help the purchase of electrified vehicles and to continue showing the support from administrations that encourage citizens to buy a new vehicle and if it is electrified, even better,” said Anfac’s communications and marketing director, Félix García.
For his part, the communications director of Faconauto, Raúl Morales, has specified that the change in trend in the last quarter has been driven by the acceleration of sales of electric cars, the operations required by the DANA of Valencia and the effect of the plans to renew the automobile fleet undertaken by the different autonomous communities.
“Despite this achievement, 2024 has been a challenging year, and 2025 poses even greater challenges,” he commented, emphasizing that to meet the emissions targets of the European Union it will be “essential” that 25% of registrations Next year it will correspond to electric vehicles in Spain.
In this sense, Ganvam’s communications director, Tania Puche, warns that the extension of the Moves III plan until June 30 is “positive”, but insists that “a new direct aid scheme at the national level needs to be launched.” that improves the effectiveness of the current one.
