Green hydrogen is one of the great hopes for the future of the energy industry and Spain is gradually positioning itself as a leader in the sector. So much so that China has signed several agreements with the country. However, Spanish and European companies do not want to be left behind either.
The largest hydrogen plant in Castellón. BP and Iberdrola They have signed an agreement with the Valencian Community to build the largest green hydrogen plant in Spain in Castellón. According to data leaked by the government of Carlos Mazón, the investment in the complex will be around 2,000 million euros and will move around 31,000 tons by 2027, when it is completed. BP will use part of its land in the Castellón refinery.
It will be operational from the second half of 2026. The works of this green hydrogen cluster will start in 2025 after the agreement is signed. The project called HyVal It will have a power of 25 MW, but the goal is to reach 200 W. The process to obtain green hydrogen will be through an electrolyzer, which will operate through Iberdrola’s renewable energies, and will separate the water molecules.
This project that started in the previous legislatureaims to produce green hydrogen for the refinery and transfer it to other industries in the area, such as ceramics, chemicals or heavy transport. In addition, the Consell has created the label of “regional interest” to facilitate investment and will have 15 million euros of aid from Next Generation.
The reinforcement of H2Med. The H2Med infrastructure is a key element in establishing Spain as a green hydrogen power. This hydrogen corridor will allow Spain to connect with other countries and provide them with this energy. As for the HyVal plant, it will be able to benefit directly from this structure when its capacity increases.
The growing investment in green hydrogen in Spain places the country in a global strategic position. We have already seen how the Chinese giant Hygreen is investing in Malaga and how the Chinese company Envision has committed to investing more than 1 billion dollars. Investments in the hydrogen energy field are positioning Spain.
