Spain and Chile will be accompanying countries of the peace process with the ELN guerrilla

Sources from the Colombian government announced on Thursday that both Spain and Chile will “officially” accompany the peace negotiations with the National Liberation Army (ELN) promoted since the arrival of Gustavo Petro at the Casa de Nariño.

Within the framework of the III Summit of Foreign Ministers of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), which is being held these days in Buenos Aires and which was also attended by a representative of the European Union, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Peace, Álvaro Leyva confirmed the decision to a Spanish colleague.

“Spain officially (…) an accompanying country”, Leyva could be heard saying, who then added that in the same way “Chile will officially accompany the peace process”.

The senior official also indicated that peace in Colombia is “a jewel to show” and that President Petro has a conviction for “universal peace, peace in Colombia and peace beyond borders.”

Leyva also highlighted Cuba’s role in the process and thanked the island for facilitating its territory to advance towards peace in Colombia.

He also added that Colombia is “a country covered in blood since 1960”, but considered that peace is possible; In this sense, he took advantage of the presence of the European countries to thank them “because they fell in love with the Havana peace agreements.”

Finally, he ended his speech calling for Latin America and the Caribbean -with the Greater and Lesser Antilles- to be a zone of peace and demand the end of a war “that is not even against Ukraine, it is against the planet.”
