Spain adds 6,459 cases of monkeypox, with 3.4% of hospitalizations

Until today, Friday, Spain has registered a total of 6,459 cases of monkeypox -175 more than the last available data for this Tuesday 23-, of which 197 were admitted to hospitals (3.4%). According to information published by the Ministry of HealthMadrid heads the regional list of confirmed cases, adding 2,297, followed by Catalonia (1,921), Andalusia (787) and the Valencian Community (430).

Far below these figures are the Basque Country (219), the Balearic Islands (189), the Canary Islands (153), Galicia (107), Castilla y León (65), Aragón (64), Asturias (55), Castilla-La Mancha (51), Extremadura (31), Cantabria (30), Murcia (48), Navarra (16) and La Rioja (5). The autonomous cities of Melilla and Ceuta have not reported any cases to date.

Of the total number of infected since May, 6,334 are men and 125 are women. Age ranges from 7 months to 88 years, with a mean age of 37. Of the 5,780 cases with available information on this variable, 197 cases were hospitalized (3.4%) and two of the cases have died due to meningoencephalitis. According to the Ministry of Health, the majority of cases are men who have sex with men (96.6%).

Regarding the most probable transmission mechanism, of the total number of cases with available information, in 92.6% it was due to close contact in the context of a sexual relationship. In relation to attendance at mass events, of the 5,077 cases with information in this section, 871 attended some event on the dates prior to the onset of symptoms.

Spain is the European country with the most cases

With these figures, Spain continues to be the European country with the highest number of notifications, together with France (3,417), Germany (3,387), the United Kingdom (3,207), the Netherlands (1,136) and Portugal (846). Most of the cases on the European continent – a total of 15,185 – correspond to young men with a history of relationships in a risky sexual context.

In the rest of the world, as of August 26, a total of 25,233 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported in non-endemic countrieswith the United States (16,926), Brazil (4,216), Peru (1,257), Canada (1,217) and Mexico (386) being the most affected.
