South Sudan president calls on political parties to register to participate in 2026 elections

MADRID Jan 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, has called on the country’s political parties to register to participate in the elections scheduled for December 2026, a new date set after numerous postponements of the elections, which would be the first since he won in 2011 its independence from Sudan.

“The elections are approaching and the day will come when they will be informed that they must go and cast their votes. We want to see our colleagues in other parties stepping forward, as some of them have not yet registered their formations,” the South Sudanese president said, according to the radio station Radio Tamazuj.

In December 2024, South Sudan’s electoral commission presented a series of resolutions aimed at facilitating its work to organize the elections, especially regarding the creation of the appropriate legal framework and the preparation of the electoral calendar for the vote.

Kiir himself promulgated in September last year an amendment to the 2011 Constitution to extend for another two years the transition period opened after the signing of the peace agreement in 2018 with the main rebel leader and current first vice president of the country, Riek Machar, a measure criticized by the international community.

Despite the decrease in violence due to political conflict in recent years, the country has seen an increase in inter-community clashes and some of the transition promises made in 2018 have still not materialized, including giving the population for the first time the right to go to the polls to elect their leaders.
