South Ossetia bans the use of drones during Victory Day events

May 5. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Security Council of South Ossetia – a pro-Russian region located in northern Georgia – has approved this Friday a ban on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles during the Victory Day celebrations on May 9.

Thus, the Committee for State Security, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Interior and the South Ossetian State Guard have received instructions to guarantee control of airspace and supervision of drone overflights.

The ban, although it is focused on the aforementioned May 9, will be in force from Sunday to Saturday May 20, as reported by the Russian news agency Interfax.

Both Russia and the rest of the nations formerly under the influence of the Soviet Union celebrate the victory over Nazi Germany on May 9, also considered the end point of World War II on European territory.

The small region of South Ossetia was the subject of dispute, along with the region of Abkhazia, between Russia and Georgia, who had a brief war in 2008. Although both territories are largely integrated into Russia, Georgia still regards them as occupied territories.
