South Korean opposition expresses concern over worsening relations with China and Russia

June 15 () –

The opposition deputies of the Democratic Party of Korea (PD) have expressed their concern on Thursday at what they consider a worsening of relations with China and Russia due to the increase in tension at the regional level.

The deputy Lee Jae Myung, opposition leader, has indicated on the occasion of the 23rd anniversary of the first inter-Korean summit in history, that relations are “deteriorating” and has warned that it is a “negative sign for the economy and the interests of South Korea on security”.

“I am concerned that our relations with China and Russia, which are considered crucial for maintaining stability and peace on the Korean Peninsula, have deteriorated so rapidly”; he has asserted during an event held in the north of Seoul, the capital.

Thus, he has indicated that “this could end up causing the two countries in question to get closer to North Korea.” “It is time to revive pragmatic diplomacy, focused on national interests,” she said, according to the Yonhap news agency.

Tensions have increased between the parties, especially between China and South Korea following a series of comments made by the Asian giant’s ambassador to the country, Xing Haiming, who assured that those who support the defeat of China within the framework of their rivalry with the United States “they will regret it later”.

Relations between Washington and Seoul have become more tense, especially after President Yoon Suk Yeol suggested turning the country’s foreign policy around and offering to send non-lethal aid to Ukraine as part of the invasion of Russia.
